Chinese Scientists Develop Programmable Illuminate Fabric, Turning Clothing into Light Displays

Shanghai researchers have developed a cutting-edge technology – washable, durable and flexible display fabric that can be used to make illuminate clothing designs.

Detailing the new fashionable technological breakthrough, the world-leading study published their findings on Thursday in Nature, one of the world’s top scientific journals.

After a decade of research effort, the state-of-art technology enables users to receive and send messages, read information, and use map navigation on their clothing.

Behind the mind-blowing innovation is the research team led by Peng Huisheng, professor of the Department of Macromolecular Science at Shanghai-based Fudan University.

The research team created a special display textile made from threads less than half a millimeter in diameter, turning T-shirts into electronic screens.

“We have managed to apply an even coating of the active layer which is only dozens of micrometers thick. The luminescent active layer only coats the surface of the fabric, so if it breaks somewhere in the middle, the light will simply go off. That is why we first made the breakthrough in the materials,” said Peng.

Peng’s team developed two kinds of fibers with different functions which can create a dynamic display effect.

In the process of fabric weaving, the interweaving of the warp made of one kind of the fiber and the weft made of the other can form a dot matrix similar to the pixels on a digital display screen.

The textile can maintain a stable performance even after being washed hundreds of times. The new technology has already been put into use in some areas of everyday life.
