Italian Sea: (World View Media, Reuters)
Italian coastguard discovered the body of a dead whale near the southern coast of Naples after they followed a young whale calf in distress at sea.
The body of the whale was towed toward the Naples harbor after a complex operation by two coastguard vessels.
Coastguard scuba divers found the body of the lifeless whale on Sunday (January 17) after spotting a calf in difficulty near the harbor of Sorrento, a coastal town that overlooks the Naples bay.
The body subsequently surfaced and was closely monitored by the coastguard, who decided to carry out an operation to move it to land.
The coastguard members arrived at shore on Wednesday (January 20), and a post-mortem will be carried out to investigate the cause of death.
The whale’s skeleton will eventually be put on display in a museum, the coastguard said.
Coastguard members continue to monitor for any more sightings of the calf.
